Endless voyage to a mysterious planet
Standing on the command deck of the massive Starship Argonos is a handsome, young man in a
white lab coat. His name is Deckard Rumax, a highly acclaimed reproductive scientist and council
member of the Pan Galactic Medical Association.
While staring into the seemingly endless, dark depths of space he loses track of time. His mind
isn’t focussed on the present, but dwelling on past events.
“It seems like a long time ago when I used to work at a ectogenesis facility. This is where
completely healthy and flawless babies are grown under the careful supervision of reproductive
scientists. Artificial uteri are widely used. It’s standard on most technologically advanced worlds…
. I was born from a artificial uterus.
It was easy for me to outperform natural born colleagues at work. During those years I showed
my worth and moved up the ranks furthering my career. Eventually I was promoted as
management director of all ectogenesis facilities of the PGMA and a member of the PGMA’s
Council.”
He earned a lot of money with that profession and lived big. However his life changed drastically
after a mysterious genetic malfunction caused infertility among 99.9 percent of the human
population in 12045 GO.
“It seemed like a normal day. I woke up early, got ready for work, but then at a regular news
update I nearly spilled my tea as I was perplexed about the report of DNA test results which
confirmed a sudden 99.9% infertility rate among all humans.” This news spread like wildfire over
all known space.
“Initially, we hoped that the artificial uteri of our medical institutions weren’t infected so they could
keep on supplying humans with sufficient offspring.
All seemed well, but after a few days it was unfortunately assessed that the genetic malfunction
had somehow corrupted the artificial uteri too, rendering them unusable.”
Shortly thereafter was a emergency meeting of the PGMA’s Council at the headquarters on Atma.
“We sat down at a big round table and discussed the situation extensively. Everybody was in
disbelief. It literally shook the foundations of our institutions and society itself.” A 60% majority
vote was necessary to approve a course of action, but many council members were in
disagreement. Some wanted to research, investigate, experiment or even wait. So a consensus
on a common course of action was not reached.
A dozen scheduled follow-up meetings also didn’t result in a strategic consensus due to a
unwillingness to compromise.
12046 GO was marked with mounting civilian disobedience across colonized space. These were
clear indications of things spiralling out of control. It sparked a fear of societal collapse among the
PGMA’s Council members. They knew a lot was on the line which nobody wanted to lose. This
fuelled a willingness to settle differences for mutual benefit.
The next day a spokesperson of the PGMA announced that it was committed to find a cure which
would restore fertility and save all humankind. The PGMA would put much resources and the
utmost effort to find the cure.
A huge fleet was sent to many colonized planets to research local human populations and collect
medical data. Deckard was also tasked with this mission. He travelled throughout known space
onboard the massive starship Argonos.
“It was an eye opener for me, because I had never seen so many planets, cultures and people in
my entire life. Most people seemed a bit afraid, but after I introduced myself they became friendly
and willing to co-operate with our medical research. I gave them some money for their
participation. It’s hard not to get caught up in the local cultures and the distinct flora and fauna of
each planet. Then reality hits back and I realize that I’m not on holiday and have to continue my
mission for the sake of saving humankind.”
In 12048 GO he receives a message from the PGMA Headquarters that they received a data file
from a anonymous source which contains evidence of a medical tradition from Earth which is a
solid lead to a effective cure. This message uplifts his spirit as hope for finding a cure increases.
Another year passed until he returned to Atma in 12049 GO to deliver data and give a couple of
speeches at medical establishments about his findings.
Between his busy schedule he was able to visit family and relatives which he hadn’t seen in a
long time. The reunions were joyful and happy events. He gave them some presents from distant,
exotic planets and talked all about his adventures.
This reunion was not meant to last though, because in 12050 GO the council assigned him with
yet another mission. This one would be very tough, requiring commitment and vigilance. Based
on the evidence of a medical tradition, he was ordered to find planet Earth and return with a cure
for the widespread infertility among almost all humans.
He heard about Earth only in fairytales and was uncertain if it actually really existed! The next day
his said farewells to family and relatives. It was hard for him to say goodbye, since it could be the
last time he would ever see them. This moment seemed to last forever. However he didn’t
hesitate to accept this mission which the survival of all humankind depended on.
Then waved goodbye and looked back once before travelling to his awaiting spaceship. The
Argonos and it’s crew was already ready and supplied with all the necessities for this long
voyage.
His mind returns to the present as he snaps out of deep meditation. Along the way to his cabin he
thinks about the seemingly endless mission. They’ve already been under way to Earth for about a
year.
There aren’t many signs that they’re getting close, but various clues along the way keep them on
the right track. He closes the cabin door and lies on his bed. With faith and perseverance they
press on further into unknown space to seek the cradle of humankind, the mysterious planet
called Earth.
